Cobscook Marketplace

We are creating a local and regional food hub in a licensed commercial kitchen and marketing co-op facility where fishermen, farmers and gardeners can process and sell Cobscook scallops and farm produce.

Cobscook fishermen need to capture the full value of their fresh “day-boat” scallops that otherwise would be combined with scallops from boats that fish for up to two weeks before landing their catch. Local farmers have identified marketing and distribution as the primary barrier to their success.

Our goals are to help increase income generating opportunities for people involved in food production in the Cobscook region; to provide greater access for Cobscook residents to healthy, affordable, locally produced food, and to create income to support the mission-related programs of the Resource Center.

Local fishermen and farmers will increase income by adding value to products and selling direct to the consumer and to specialty and niche markets. Consumers will get better access to a broader range of local and regional food. This will help keep money in the local economy, support fishing families and family farms, reduce transportation costs, and ensure that fresh, healthy food stays available and becomes more affordable.
